Like other types of leather, cowhide will be tanned and then made into genuine products. Therefore, tanning cowhide is similar to tanning the skin of other species such as sheep, buffalo, goat... However, there are still some differences in each step to make it more suitable.
Steps in tanning technology
Step 1: Prepare for tanning
Like other types of leather, the first step in cowhide tanning technology is preliminary processing to remove excess parts such as connective tissue. This is also the step where you will classify the quality of leather types to make products such as: textured cowhide, waxed cowhide... This step includes many small steps as follows:
Moisturizing: The purpose of this step is to make cowhide "come back to life". However, it needs to be done carefully otherwise it will create conditions for bacteria to multiply. The appropriate temperature at this stage is 26-270C
Lime-soaked hair removal: This is a cleaning and disinfection step that requires high techniques in terms of temperature, chemicals, water and time.
Thinning: This is a step that helps you turn pieces of leather into pieces for production
Lime removal and softening: This is the final stage to help you make your skin soft and smooth. Therefore, when wearing a leather jacket, we feel very cool and comfortable.
Step 2: Tanning cowhide
This is the most important step. We will use K2Cr2O7 to hydrolyze to form alkaline chromium salt
K2Cr2O7 + 3H2SO4 + R —› K2SO4 + 2CrOHSO4 + RO + H2O
After 2 hours of spinning, we need to check the penetration of the acidifier. Once achieved, add: 6 - 8% Cr2O3 powder, spin for 6-8 hours, test the penetration after 3 - 4 hours, add 0 .5 – 1% Mentrigan MOG, roast for 1-2 hours. At the same time, temperature and pH must be tested.
– For alum skin, it is necessary to use an anti-mold agent (usually 0.3-0.5% Preventol WB).
Step 3: Edit and produce quality tanned cowhide
This is the final step of the tanning technology to make the skin look perfect. The skin at this step is still quite damp, so it is necessary to remove moisture to avoid bacteria from growing. Cowhide will be dried by drying, then will be softened and refinished to make it beautiful.
